The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 原以为还是老生常谈的话题，没想到戏剧张力十足，立意比同题材高很多，Emma Tompson给我太多惊叹，小鲜肉固然可口，学会自己满足自己才是王道。
比bootleg的观感好了太多，我又从头哭到尾了。明明是在人最容易丧失尊严的时机，Newfoundland却保证了每个人的尊严。记得从超市拿除臭剂，记挂动物的安危，捐衣服，带人回家洗澡……这些远超过生存层面的援助，让人在灾难之中，依然还是个人。虽然是主旋律正能量的，但不提政府，少见组织，只是人对人的帮助。赞歌唱给的是人性，唱得真心于是我也哭得动情。与此同时，对种族/信仰歧视也提及得毫不避讳，没有妄想塑造出一个乌托邦。歌写得也是真好，意象新颖转折自然，机长的天空之歌和情侣的分别之歌，都是能听到我屏息的程度。中老年情侣也有权登上舞台也能甜得不得了啊！机长帅死了帅死了我的天她的片段我会经常温习的。【啊她果然是弯的！
看完感觉自己也是个confident independent strong woman
有点像话剧，固定场景，靠大段大段的对话推进故事情节，旨在讲女人不必年龄焦虑，要更好的爱自己，性并不可耻。最后的艾玛好美啊，直面镜中的自己，里奥真不错哟~
二个人的对白剧，通过“深入”了解的过程打开人与人之间的防范。结合欧美文化是一种对彼此肉与灵接纳的唯美的表达，现实做不到的浪漫越是无比憧憬。
两位主演的表演也很精彩。Emma的眼神，肢体动作等等把角色的情绪展现得细腻至极，而leo从一开始的神秘到后面的情绪暴发过渡也很自然。
这种封闭空间全靠对话推进的少数人的舞台剧型电影，英国人玩的最溜。无论套用什么样的大环境和目的，还是需要靠人物关系推动剧情进展的。两代人观念的碰撞与和解，理解与自省才能达到有效交流。Emma Thompson真的是从年轻美到老，尤其第四段，我爱她布满皱纹的容颜和镜前的全裸
两个相互有秘密的人，通过年龄差的欲望，还有所谓正常社会秩序下的面具人类，放下了一切墨守成规，彼此放下戒备也相互治愈。性就像是空气，享受愉悦，而不是享受禁锢享受混乱。残酷的是现实生活里可没这么高质量的牛郎哦吼吼！

一方面过于直白，缺少非语言的电影美。一方面意识形态过度小清新，干嘛用那么多话语淹没做爱，你们在害怕什么🤔口交完内裤穿回去、还有结尾那小小的性高潮都好假。
虽然情节都在意料中，但丝毫无损它的完美和独特。
疫情解封后的百老汇音乐剧+911 20周年纪念让这部作品天然意义非凡，相比《汉密尔顿》讲述美国国父背后的男人的丰功伟绩，《来自远方》展现了加拿大纽芬兰岛民的力量与善意，it's a celebration of humanity，这是对普通人的赞歌。
